Description
When Radios Appear crashed onto the scene in 1977, it sounded less like a debut and more like a declaration of independence. Recorded far from the major-label machinery, this album was the product of six Sydney outsiders who built their own universe — and refused to ask for permission.
Radio Birdman’s mix of Detroit high energy and surf-infused apocalypse remains one of the most distinctive voices to emerge from the late-70s underground. The guitars slash and surge, Deniz Tek channelling the Stooges and MC5 through a sharper, colder Australian lens, while Rob Younger delivers each line with controlled menace.
From the wired precision of “Do the Pop” and “Murder City Nights” to the ominous sprawl of “Man with Golden Helmet” and “Descent into the Maelstrom”, the record swings between fury and focus — chaos, but always deliberate. It’s punk before punk knew itself, and rock and roll that still sounds like it’s coming from the end of the world.
Nearly fifty years later, Radios Appear hasn’t aged; it’s just been waiting for the rest of the world to catch up.
