Sempre se falou superficialmente sobre as décadas de quarenta a setenta em Portugal, em certa medida devido às vicissitudes políticas e sociais inerentes ao regime político dessa época: ambientes e ambiências, vivências à flor-da-pele que ficaram cristalizadas no tempo e que estão à espera de serem redescobertas.

O que começou por ser um longo relato de estórias verdadeiras e fabulosas de uma vida cheia de aventuras e emoções resultou numa obra sensorial, quase cinematográfica, cheia de som, cor e imagens. Um autêntico convite à viagem espaço-temporal e um festim estético a nível visual:

Uma infância dura e sem família:
“Uma das memórias mais marcantes, no início de vida no Instituto, eram os guinchos arrepiantes que as hienas lançavam durante a noite – as kizumbas! Os miúdos trancavam-se o melhor que podiam nas camaratas dos tais barracões inóspitos e ouviam aquela chiadeira terrível que mais fazia lembrar um choro fúnebre.”

Um miúdo rebelde e destemido:
“Em janeiro de 1956, quase a fazer dezasseis anos, o Victor enceta outros caminhos profissionais; procura trabalho como actor e como músico. Deambula por Lourenço Marques, junto ao cais, armado em teddy-boy com um gang de sete rapazolas. Seguiam os modelos dos “rebel without a cause” como as personagens protagonizadas pelos actores James Dean e Marlon Brando: poupa cheia de brilhantina, blue jeans, blusão de ganga com a gola levantada, atitude desafiadora ao “sistema”, à coca de namoradinhas.”

Os primeiros amores e dissabores:
“O Victor calçou umas sapatilhas e lá foram dar uma volta até ao Hotel Polana. Conversaram, conversaram, deram as mãos, deram os lábios e … deram outras coisas. Pronto, o Victor fora “caçado” pela ambiciosa “gazela” sul-africana.”

A sensualidade e sexualidade carismática em palco:
“Ao longo dos inúmeros espetáculos dos “Gatos Negros”, os adolescentes afoitos invadiam o palco e desnudavam o Victor arrancando pedaços da roupa de cabedal. Ao fim de algum tempo, as raparigas passariam a fazer o mesmo que o rapazes. Com os bocaditos de cabedal nas mãos tinham a grande lata de ir pedir autógrafos ao Victor, como se aquele material negro se prestasse a ser escrito. Claro que era o Vasco Morgado que financiava as correntes e o cabedal.”

Há fados e fados e este é outro tipo de fado – é o Rock ‘n’ Roll! É o lado histriónico, à beira da vertigem, misturado sabiamente com o calor tropical africano e com as frias pedras da calçada de Lisboa, tantas vezes ziguezagueadas por Victor Gomes esse “globetrotter” ávido de afecto do seu público. Por tudo isto e muito mais… “Juntos Outra Vez”.

Ondina Pires
Ondina Pires nasceu em Lisboa, em 1961. Esteve ligada à cena musical rock como baterista, compositora, vocalista e performer (Pop dell’ Arte e The GLS) e, às artes plásticas ao longo dos anos 80/90 até 2008. Desde 2002 que tem colaborado na revista “Umbigo”: artigos de opinião e entrevistas (estética e culturas alternativas). Em 2009 editou o livrou Scorpio Rising: Transgressão Juvenil, Anjos do Inferno e Cinema de Vanguarda, pelas editoras CCC/Thisco, a partir da sua tese de Mestrado em Estudos Americanos e que teve como corpus de análise o filme de Kenneth Anger, Scorpio Rising. No prelo mais dois livros de cariz cultural e estético.

“Together again: authorized biography of Victor Gomes” is a book which describes the history and story of another Portugal, still unknown by the majority and waiting to be discovered by Portuguese and foreigner readers. The past decades in Portugal (from the ‘40s to the ‘70s) were always refered superficially, to some extent due to political and social vicissitudes inherent in the political system of that time: environments and ambiences, experiences in full bloom, which remained crystallized in time waiting to be revealed.

What began as a long account of true and fabulous stories of a life filled with adventures and emotions resulted in a sensory work, almost cinematic, full of sound, colour and images. A true invitation to a space-time travel and an aesthetic feast on the visual level:

A tough childhood without family:
“One of the most striking memories in his early life at the Institute, were the chilling shrieks of the hyenas ululating during the night – the “kizumbas”! The boys locked up the best they could in the wards of such inhospitable barracks and heard those awful sounds that resembled more to a massive funeral crying.”

A rebellious and undaunted kid:
“In January 1956, almost sixteen years old, Victor began other career paths; he looked for work as an actor and as a musician. He wanders around Lourenço Marques downtown near the wharf, putting on airs of a teddy-boy with a gang of seven stout boys. They followed the model of the “rebel without a cause” as the characters enthralled by actors such as James Dean and Marlon Brando:  greased quiff or duck tail hairdo, blue jeans, denim jacket with the collar turned up, defiant attitude to the “system”, in search of girlfriends.”

First loves and heartaches:
“Victor put on a pair of sneakers, borrowed a bicycle and they went for a ride to the Hotel Polana nearby the beach. They talked, talked, held hands, gave their lips and they gave … other things. Done!! Victor had been “hunted” by the ambitious South African “gazelle”.”

The charismatic sensuality and sexuality on stage:
“Over the many shows “Gatos Negros” did, the daring teenagers invaded the stage and stripped off Victor by tearing pieces of his leather clothing. After some time, the girls would do the same as boys. They carried the little bits of leather skin in their hands and had the nerve to ask autographs to Victor, as if that black stuff was good to be written on. Of course it was Vasco Morgado that financed the chains and the leather…”

There are fados and fados and this is another kind of fado– it is Rock ‘n’ Roll! It is the histrionic side, on the edge of vertigo, wisely mixed with African tropical heat and the cold cobblestones of Lisbon, often zig zaged by Victor Gomes, this “globetrotter” avid for the affection of his audience.
