Description

A compilation in honor of the American blues singer and pianist Screamin’ Jay Hawkins (1929-2000) can only have one title: “I Put A Spell On You.” The eccentric piece, written by him, with his characteristic screams, shouts, and grunts, is not only the trademark song of the extravagant musician but also had a significant influence on the pop history of the 1950s and was accordingly included in “The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll.” However, it took two tries to achieve this recognition. Hawkins first recorded the song at the end of 1955, but this version sold only moderately. After switching labels in 1956, another version of the song was produced in the same year, which eventually became world-famous. According to legend, all the musicians involved in the recording were completely drunk. “I Put A Spell On You” was covered by a number of notable acts, including The Animals, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Nina Simone, Them, The Who, Joe Cocker, Marilyn Manson, and Katie Melua. Ironically, Hawkins later distanced himself from the piece. He felt he had created a monster that he now had to live with. His attempts to produce less eccentric songs were not very successful.
