The Squares, from Nancy, France, were one of the finest French garage bands of the early ’90s, with a sound deeply rooted in the Medway tradition: raw garage, rhythm & blues and a healthy dose of attitude.

Between their formation and their split in 1995, The Squares released five singles and five LPs, and were among the first bands to record at Liam Watson’s Toe Rag Studio in London, alongside The Kaisers, The Flaming Stars, The Gloomies, The Neanderthals and others. Ollie also spent time behind the drums with The Headcoats in 1990.

After The Squares called it a day, the members continued with various projects, including Thundercrack and Mr Zero. In 2025, the band reunited, returning to the stage for a handful of furious shows, including Wild Weekend in Mallorca and gigs in Nancy, followed by an appearance opening for The Masonics in Paris in 2026.

Now comes the definitive double LP: Night Of The Squares / Square Roots.

Night Of The Squares gathers all the singles originally released by The Squares, while Square Roots digs into the band’s archives to present 15 previously unissued covers, recorded during extra-time sessions at Toe Rag between 1991 and 1995.

These recordings show The Squares paying their dues to the artists and songs that shaped them, with versions of material associated with Chuck Berry, Link Wray, The Seeds, Bo Diddley, The Milkshakes, The Kinks and many more.

Two LPs, bringing together the released singles and a previously unheard side of the band’s early years.
